The sea, with its changing reflections, froth and small marinas, invites us to travel. Whether you are a fan of turbulent waves crashing against steep cliffs or enjoy contemplating the calm of a fishing port, the sea - depicted in all its forms by KAZoART's artists - will take you on a journey. Breathe in the sea air whilst navigating our selection of seascape paintings!

The sea as a subject in paintings

The sea fascinates artists first of all from a purely plastic perspective. The complex movement of the sea and the reflections of light on its surface remain a huge challenge for painters, as can be seen in Manet's famous seaside painting Impression, Sunrise.

The sea is also popular for its mysterious and dangerous side. Sometimes cruel and unforgiving, it takes the lives of those that dare venture there in Jacques Vernet's seascape painting Four times of the Day, and becomes capricious in William Turner's renowned ocean painting Snow Storm - Steam-Boat off a Harbour's Mouth. It is imbued with history in the famous naval battles of Auguste Mayer's Battle of Trafalgar. Calm and sunny, it becomes a place of meditation and contemplation for Henri Matisse in his famous seascape Luxe, Calm et Volupté.

The history of seascape painting

Seascape painting is a pictorial genre which experienced a significant boom in the 17th century with Dutch painters notably including Andries Van Eertvelt (Embarkation of Spanish Troops). The sea is a place of trade between faraway countries and the site of battles mercilessly fought between powers. It is this relation that was primarily depicted in seascape paintings by 17th century artists.

From the 19th century, it became easier for artists to visit the coast thanks to the accessibility of the train (Gustave Courbet, The Sea; Eugène Boudin, The Beach at Trouville). Whilst primarily the symbol of changeability and torment for the Romantic painters (Turner, Stormy Sea with Blazing Wreck, The Shipwreck), this vast body of water is colourful and joyous in the more rustic seascape paintings of the Impressionists (Alfred Sisley, Bateau sur la Mer).
