Resin is one of the most recent materials used in sculpture. Appearing in the 20th century, its use in Art History has less anteriority than other materials such as bronze, wood or stone. KAZoART has selected for your pleasure the best of contemporary resin sculpture, a truly timely technique!
Resin is a synthetic product with many advantages. Like textile and fabric sculpture, it is relatively lighter than bronze or wood. The transport of a resin sculpture is therefore much easier.
Furthermore, the artist has a great deal of freedom to create his or her pieces because resin is adaptable and very malleable. Resin sculptures are very resistant to time and the elements and are therefore suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Contemporary sculptors take advantage of this recent medium to create colourful and strikingly realistic portraits.
Resin is a fairly recent material in the practice of sculpture. Indeed, if terracotta, bronze and stone have been used since Antiquity, resin found its beginning in the 20th century. The sculptors are interested in this new medium by gradually moving away from more traditional castings like bronze or plaster. Some contemporary artists even specialize in textile sculpture and fabric sculpture, proof that practices are evolving without abandoning the most noble materials.
Resin sculpture was made famous by Niki de Saint Phalle, the French artist best known for her Nanas. By creating monumental sculptures of women, the artist proved that polyester resin could be used for all artistic possibilities. Today, extremely promising sculptors have picked up the baton, such as Xavier Veilhan, Ron Mueck or Richard Orlinski.
