Born in 1952 in Strasbourg, Robert Guhmann has been drawing and painting since childhood. He entered the Strasbourg School of Decorative Arts in 1968 as a free student under the direction of Joseph Gass. During his medical studies at the University of Strasbourg, he taught nude drawing at the École supérieure des arts décoratifs de Strasbourg, now the Haute Ecole des Arts du Rhin from 1974 to 1977.
He exhibited his works for the first time at the exhibition organized by RICARD in 1978. In the early 1980s, Robert Guhmann's name was included in the dictionary of Alsatian painters. The Museum of Painted and Popular Alsatian Imagery in Pfaffenhoffen (Alsace) exhibits the artist's paintings.
His style was then marked by the representation of the visible, in particular portraits, landscapes and still lifes. In the 1990s, his style evolved towards a greater abstraction, turned towards the harmony of organized forms and a palette of bright colours.
He freed himself from fidelity to visual reality and created oil paintings as well as works of mixed media (charcoal, pastel, collage, chalk, acrylic). In 2000, his works were exhibited at the Galerie Soufflot de la Sorbonne in Paris. In 2012, an exhibition is dedicated to him at the National Museum in Wuhan (Hubei, China). Now retired from general medicine, he devotes himself fully to his passion for creation.
