Born in Paris in 1955, Gilles Grimon was an early draughtsman and trained at the ENSAD (Arts Déco) school at the age of seventeen, before staying at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.
After a 35-year career in Paris as an illustrator for the magazine press (Le Point, l'Obs, Marie-Claire...), publishing and communication, he decided 12 years ago to devote himself exclusively to painting. After having lived in London and Milan, he has been living in Provence for about ten years.
He has exhibited in Milan, Paris, Berlin, Brussels, Miami and New York. His approach integrates a principle of visual disturbance resulting from the research of optical art. Each of his paintings represents several times the same superimposed portrait.
With each superposition, the portrait changes color and pattern: the portrait is the pattern and the pattern is the portrait. The gaze then simultaneously perceives a frame and a volume, and from this optical contradiction arises a vibration. As for his technique, it is classic: oil painting on canvas, with colours that he makes himself.
