A dialogue between the hand and a nascent form, the stone showing the way... Direct carving allows Gilles Merle to express without restraint a feeling, to confront the material and the real, without going through the mind or a projection of thought. To create a particular link from the living to the mineral, to discover and reveal the sensuality hidden within.

He first explored a figurative and then semi-figurative dimension by creating large statues with an essentially "feminine" shape. His approach today is more personal and singular. Gilles Merle works with pure line, abstract forms, in a search for visual and sensitive balance.

He creates his sculptures either in white Carrara marble or from pebbles chosen during his walks on the banks of rivers and streams. Texture, shape, colour, all their singularity intervenes in the process of creation, the intention being to sublimate "the soul of the stone".

Gilles Merle often works in a direction he feels is right for him. The pebble, just like sculpture, are completely "useless" objects, occupying an essential place. He wishes to propose an object, which will know how to touch, be touched and have its place in everyday life in a singular way.
