Born in Aix en Provence, Hugues Breton is a self-taught plastic artist. After many years of drawing, he tried his hand at acrylics and then became interested in watercolors. Over time, his plastic activity diversified with sculpture and the creation of visual, sound and scenographic installations. Since 2013, the encounter with other disciplines such as dance or writing, and collaboration with other artists have been the driving force of his work, especially within the collective Et Autres things Useless.

Cradled by literary, cinematographic or live performance universes (Hayao Myazaki, Circus Ronaldo, Jean Baptiste Thiérrée ...) Hugues Breton first created imaginary, strange and poetic worlds, fueling a work directed towards illustration. It is then around the meeting of movement, light and lightness that his work revolves. His taste for storytelling led him to illustrate The Little Boy Who Wanted His Story (text by Raymond Penblanc) and Monsieur Arroyo (text by Juliette Penblanc), published by Lunatique editions.

At the end of this exploration, it is towards the friction between the real and the imaginary that his interest is directed. In contact with literature (Jean Giono, Antoine Volodine, Haruki Murakami, José Saramago ...) his work focuses on "magical realism" leading to the creation of immersive installations ("Les fous" with Juliette Penblanc and Olivier Vauquelin , “The Surveyor” with the Collective and Other Useless Things and Céline Barreau Gondran). Since then, his work has been moving in these two directions.

On the one hand, an approach of contemporary art and research in painting resulting from the learning of the techniques of Eva Karpinska and collaborating with the universe of contemporary poetry. After two artist's books in collaboration with Juliette Penblanc (Les hirondelles ont volé mon cri and Second corps), her most recent work, the series "En traversant la nuit" (# 4 of which is one of the choices of the Art editorial team). Major of May 2019) inspired by the text Seven holes in her and night by Juliette Penblanc, mixes photos taken by the artist, printed on watercolor paper, then transformed by watercolor into abstract or surrealist images. An installation made up of these 14 paintings, a short film with reading of the text by Juliette Penblanc, was exhibited in July 2021 with the support of Feng Ge and Raymond Martinez, by the Pigments gallery (Jacques Jaubert) in Lurs. (Room of the Penitents - FRAC).

On the other hand, he continues his work around the universe developed by his illustrations, which after having been “boxed” and in volume in the form of dioramas, led to the scenographic and plastic creation “Caisse” in collaboration with the dancer Céline Barreau Gondran. It is a one hour show, introduced by a “corridor” of dioramas leading to a life-size box in which the life of a character unfolds. The show was scheduled at the Jean Le Bleu Theater in Manosque for the 2020 season.

Since his beginnings, Hugues Breton has never sought to represent unambiguous beauty. It is the preoccupation with an ambiguous beauty, likely to disturb, which is often at work in his creations. Hugues Breton also pursues his profession as an emergency doctor, which he practices in the Alpes de Hautes Provence where he resides.
