Léonard Tsugouharu Foujita (Franco-Japanese, 1886-1968) was a painter and printmaker, born in Edogawa, Tokyo. He received his training at the Imperial School of Fine Arts and quickly achieved success, with commissions from the emperors of Korea and Japan.
In 1913, he traveled to Paris and immediately befriended many of the leading painters of the time, including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, Henri Matisse, Henri Rousseau and Chaim Soutine. He formed a particularly close friendship with the famous Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani.
Known for his eccentric personality, Foujita earned a colorful reputation for his haircut, earrings and glasses. But beyond the public image, Foujita took his work very seriously, displaying a predilection for white and pale tones like lavender and gray. Foujita stood on the border between Japanese and European art and was constantly inspired by women and cats.
