Chiharu Shiota creates places emptied of all human presence, of all physical presence, but where literally the threads of memory, the temporal imprints come to weave spider webs that link inert objects to past time, to moments, to presences that exist only in memory.
Chiharu Shiota was born in Osaka, Japan in 1972. She studied at the University of Kyoto and then went to Europe to study at the University of Fine Arts in Berlin and at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg. She learns from the best as she works in the studio of established artists such as Marina Abramovic and Rebecca Horn.
She displays her female influences such as Louise Bourgeois, Eva Hesse or Ana Mendieta, who also focus their work on physical experimentation, the unconscious and materials evoking femininity such as thread and textile.)
"The threads are woven into each other. They tangle. They tear. They unravel. They are like a mirror of feelings. This is how the artist describes her monumental installations, through which she explores the body, temporality, movement, memory and dreams, involving the viewer physically and mentally.
She has made a name for herself in the contemporary art world with her spectacular works, halfway between performance, body art and installation, immediately recognizable by their use of braided thread. Chiharu Shiota's work projects an overwhelming vision of the world that is truly unforgettable. The memory of things has always been her favorite theme.
Her work is very well known, she exhibits in the most important contemporary art galleries in the world, but also at the National Museum of Art in Osaka in 2008 or at the Venice Biennale in 2015.
