Dominique de Gaudric invites us to contemplate precise moments. She freezes a scene, recreates emotions and, even when the locations are empty – as is the case for the residential interiors she lays down on canvas – ensures they emanate a feeling of rest.
Originally from Belgium, Dominique de Gaudric lived in Spain, Canada and the Ivory Coast before settling down in France. This rich and cosmopolitan youth is almost certainly what gave her a taste for observing and depicting the world in all its variety. She began painting figurative landscapes as a teenager without relying on any specific techniques.
Her career took a turn when she began working in the world of haute couture, an environment which inspired her with its new settings. After many years without painting, she later returned to her first love and began taking classes at the Beaux-Arts in Paris.
Dominique de Gaudric’s work focuses on a handful of recurring themes: large residential interiors in which items act as characters, and landscapes depicted with vigorous strokes. Fascinated by colour and light, she aims to produce pieces in which her sensibilities can communicate with those of the observer.
De Gaudric gives free rein to her creative process, sometimes working from a photo or a model, creating distance without losing the original authenticity of the subject.
