Born in Hyères in May 1969, Florence Levy lives and works in the south of France. Colors, materials, smells, art and curiosities have rocked her childhood... A seamstress mother, a father passionate about art and antiques (Napoleonic period) and a home like an Ali Baba's cave, have nourished her imagination.
His childhood offered him a rich and permanent abundance while developing his taste for research and experimentation. His quest for life is rooted in his childhood, scented by vacations in a small fisherman's cottage in La Madrague near Giens or in Ajaccio. Roots and travels that have led him to develop an openness to the world.
"I pursue and develop my own pictorial tracks by alternating times of artistic residence and study trips in France and abroad. These moments of creation, rich in sharing and exchange with the apprentice students, alternate with times of solitude in my studio where, like an alchemist, I search for color. The one that will give birth to the form that I unfold to build a puzzle with infinitely multi-faceted.
The color is fundamental in my work! It is constructive and I question it as a subject in its own right. Investing in authentic places, contemplating the landscapes that surround me and finding myself painting outside free of any confining space, on the beach, in nature, bathed in light as a reference material, is also part of my creative process." "A graduate of the Ecole Supérieure d’Art in Aix-en-Provence and the Observatory of Cultural Policies in Grenoble, I learn and nourish myself with fascination from the Masters who guide my creation. The timelessness of D. Velasquez’s works and the power of L. de Vinci’s invention captivate me. I explore different media with which I approach the compositions of cubism invented by Braque and Picasso. Le Corbusier’s work as an architect challenges me & beyond the structure, I discover his philosophy of the collective "on how to live" and its pure, round & feminine forms. F. Léger’s autonomous geometric volumes, which create a dynamic antagonism between them, will bring reflection to my questions and allow me to brutalize tradition by pursuing my research on abstraction. The assemblages of forms animated by Calder’s movements of the air open my window on the dream but it is only when I confront the work of Niki de St Phalle that a disruption occurs in me, I quote the artist in 1953 "I started painting in the madmen... I discovered the dark universe of madness and its healing, I learned to translate into painting my feelings, fears, violence, hope and joy". Her oversized works and her risk-taking make me aware of the patriarchal scheme she breaks by clearly displaying her position as an artist-woman in the public space and I start my work on the power of colour that I tirelessly pursue by taking an interest in the works of another female artist, Sonia Delaunay who takes me on a notion of Art in everyday life.
My canvases gradually leave the frame to find themselves on the ground, like woven skins that are an integral part of the landscape that welcomes me. Colours orchestrated by an authentic and singular hand, a spontaneous gesture, cover the latter, burlesque forms that coexist with an imaginary world in search of living and accessible to All, gradually rising and unfolding in the public space, while seeking to dialogue with the viewer. I tend to invite the public not to remain inactive and to take their place in the process of reflection and redefinition of the patterns of functioning of our contemporary societies and thus advance the world... by occupying its place, healing force, my creations will gradually settle down as energetic light points, resting space or simply starting the healing process to advance in the search for respect for our inner child...
