Hildegarde Handsaeme's paintings are a suite of odes to womankind - not only through the plasticity of the bodies but most importantly through the expression of sensuality - and the search for the feelings within and evoked by it. Nudity is omnipresent, the shapes are generous, and the attitudes can be seen as slices of life.
In just a few years, Hildegarde Handsaeme has created a truly original style which matches the technique she uses: a style dominated by lines, colour and an innate sense of balance.
The voluptuous bodies with precise contours contrast the straight lines which connect the movement they depict. This background serves to both draw attention to the figure represented and act as a vehicle for the emotional charge that propels it to centre stage.
Hildegarde Handsame works without models, breathing her personality into silhouettes which, like archetypes, embody radiant femininity. The limited but carefully chosen range of colours adds to the purity of the shapes.
Shining a spotlight on womankind, femininity and the body, this Belgian artist challenges the observer’s mind-set. The deconstructed forms demonstrate her incredible mastery of lines which are never left to chance.
