Claire Allard was born on April 20th, 1964 in the suburbs of Paris. She holds that painting and drawing fulfilled her life.
First during her childhood she was sensitive to “impressions” and “resonances” and was influenced by her father who taught her to see beyond the green of the leaves. Yes, if you take the time to notice things, if you allow yourself to be flooded with light, you’ll be able to see the yellow, the orange or the violet in the trees. Isn’t it gorgeous ? The magic of the eyes is essential for identifying the beauty in colours and shades around us. By doing so, life transforms itself, becomes richer. If you have done this, Allard says that you have learnt to see through the artist’s glasses. She then takes her vision and re-transcribes it.
Coming from a family of artists, Claire’s great-uncle Robert FALCUCCI was a painter and a poster designer as well. She had admired him ever since she was a little girl. She never grew tired of watching him paint fabulous, colourful canvasses filled with the magical, even mystical energy that dwelt in him until he died.
Travelling has also influenced her artistic conscious, particularly the discovery of Corsica, from whence her ancestors came. There, “the frangrances, the colours and the sounds echoe one another” (Charles Baudelaire). The beautiful island to which she has travelled every year for 40 years has a very special light, magnificent scenery, and genuine villages that have always fascinated her. It was love at first sight.
The artist believes that there must be also other influences such as music and opera that help her channel her energy. We are filled with pictures, resonances, light but how do we convey and express what they mean? She started using bold pastels very early because it is a straight forward technique that connects matter and colours. Later, she happened to add some ink and the effect was magical! The two of them match and form a luminous couple. Starting from visual aids like a photograph taken in a real-life situation and then alters them to reflect what she sees in them.Allard is guided by the mystery of her inspiration.
It took some time for her to attack oil painting, never thinking it was the medium for her. And to her great surprise, she and oil painting got on very well! Perhaps it is due to the smell of turpentine that would remind her of her family’s painting studios ?
This sort of work takes more time and is more constructive, but the technique teaches her patience. From here, Claire Allard made the choice to use the two techniques together in her work. They complement and match each other. Such will be the subject of her next exhibition.
Allard hopes that when viewing her virtual gallery, you’ll see her passion for colours, the vital energy that dwells within her, and her desire to create beauty for your pleasure in a world that revels too much in ugliness.
She would like to end with a quote by Walt Disney as it embodies her work and worldview: “Dream your life in colours, such is the secret of happiness”.
