David Vall was born in France in 1978. Although interested in graphite pencil drawing, Indian ink painting and Japanese calligraphy from very early on, he turned to scientific studies and became a researcher in behavioural neuroscience. He spent two years in British Columbia and discovered landscapes and lights of a rare emotional intensity that awakened him to the use of colour in his painting.

His sources of inspiration are multiple: an admired work of art, the memory of a contemplated landscape, an emotion or a state of mind that clings to the soul and wishes to take shape. Many of his paintings are also inspired by natural elements.

Marcello Cazzaniga, an art critic and curator comments on David Vall's work:

"We are dealing with works that start from the observation of reality - colours and textures are proof of this - but there seems to be even more: an obvious emotional involvement that transforms into a chaotic element that gives an extra dimension to the compositions. The colours are natural but become material and the contrasts are inevitably accentuated, the textures are those of the bark, water or soil, or even simply the view of a landscape obscured by mist. Despite the particular character of these works, we find a very engaging dynamism both in their compositional development and in the chromatic contrasts, and even when these are absent, textured materials compensate for this lack. David Vall’s landscapes are articulated around the artist’s sensitivity, establishing a privileged relationship between the spectator, the work and the author, in which the existence of an emotional dimension as beautiful as it is exhilarating becomes the reason to give life to the works but also to enjoy them during a moment of relaxed contemplation."
