MAUGUIO (34), France
Often referred to as "cold beauty" or "exquisite corpse", Jam Despas’ work plays with contrasts of all shapes and represents the body in its most paradoxical aspects. Deliberately dehumanized and freed from all social values (ethnicity, culture, sexuality, clothing...), his painting deconstructs what makes up the physical identity of a body. The more naked he is, the more we discover the coldness of the skin’s material, the psychological violence it conceals. What interests him is above all to understand what the body of his models is made of, what constitutes them, what builds them and sometimes even deconstructs them. A memory, a feeling, an emotion, in short what he calls "the act of the sublime" are often the starting point of his paintings.
Passionate about drawing from an early age, Jam Despas trained at university in five years. He quickly specialized in body representation by taking anatomy, performance and sculpture courses. It is through his encounters and a sociological study conducted in 2015 that he will understand that the body is the major challenge of our contemporary society. A teacher since 2017, he also teaches based on the notion of the body, its limits and expressive possibilities.
