Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, James Rosenquist and Claes Oldenburg are the emblematic figures of American Pop Art that emerged in the 60s and 70’s. Concerning new realism, a French artistic trend that emerged following the English and American Pop Art movements, César, Arman, Yves Klein, Martial Raysse, Daniel Spoerri, Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean Tinguely and Raymond Hains, are the most accomplished and well known artists of this movement.
Pop Art is an artistic movement that first began in England and then became very popular in America. American Pop Art is mainly focused on issues that emerge in a hyper-consumerist society and their impact on the general public. Humorous, ironic and even cynical, Pop Art denounces or ridicules the power of images in the media.
By employing industrial manufacturing techniques for their works, pop art artists reduce the status of artwork by making many reproductions. The techniques are therefore rather varied and can range from silkscreen printing to painting, to photography and collages. There can also be the use of polystyrene beads, lacquer, and metal sheets. Current pop art artists work with all of these mediums and so much more!
