Famous Sculpture Artists

From Antiquity until the beginning of the 20th century, sculpture was classified into artistic movements by art historians (Romanesque, Gothic, Classical, Baroque, Neo-Classicism, Romanticism, etc.). Each new trend highlights an evolution in the art of sculpting, if only for the materials and tools used, which show a significant technical advancement that can be seen in the execution of each sculpture.

Among the greatest sculpture artists who have marked the art history with their audacity and virtuosity are Michelangelo (La Pietà; Le David), Nicolas Coustou (La Seine et la Marne), Jean-Antoine Houdon (Bust of Voltaire), Antoine-Louis Barye (Lion with snake), Antonio Canova (Psyche revived by the kiss of Love), Auguste Rodin (The Gates of Hell), Alberto Giacometti (Walking Man), not to mention contemporary sculpture artists such as Jean Tinguely (Méta Matics) and Niki de Saint Phalle (Nanas).

Sculpture: its definitions, supports, techniques

Sculpture, present in art since the Paleolithic era, is the result of an artistic practice characterised by the size of various materials in order to create forms in volume. While this process varies according to the artist, the time and the materials used, it generally follows the same path. First a mould is taken from a model then the casting takes place and then the work is completed.

More than any other type of sculpture, the statue remains the most sought after and is generally reserved for an elite. The materials used to make a sculpture vary considerably from one country to another.

For many centuries, wood and stone remained the two main materials used by sculptors. In the 19th and 20th centuries, sculpture artists went off the beaten track and tested new combinations of materials. Modern day sculpture artists do not hesitate to use glass, plastic, iron or even organic materials to create their sculptures. It should be noted that by varying and multiplying the materials in the same contemporary sculpture, the artist thus plays on the characteristics (colour, plastic effect, etc.) of each material used.
