Questioning the notion of line, Sophie Jaffro’s work combines the use of an automatic, instinctive gesture and the control of the line. At the beginning, as if to get rid of all constraints, of all cultural baggage, it was through abstraction that she was able to create a repertoire of simple forms: these lines, which she gradually began to reappropriate. The drawn line is considered as an elementary, neutral material, whose possibilities it exploits, each of the works being an interrogation on what can appear. By imposing her will again in drawing, she also addresses questions related to the role of the draftsman, which corresponds to a resumption of control entering into dialogue with automatism and the place left to chance and accident.
In the figuration she also addresses, Sophie Jaffro uses the line beyond being a means of representation. Here too, she questions the way in which living beings oscillate between chaos and organization, drawing inspiration from and attempting to transcribe these "natural laws" that govern the organic.
