Fascinated by paper since childhood, I have never stopped exploring it in all its facets. Today, I draw with surgical scalpels that allow me to make my patterns appear in the thickness of the sheet. Patiently, I slowly exhale as I push the blade into the paper. Breath after breath, notch after notch, the lines bring out a drawing created freehand without a preparatory sketch. This intimate work is closely watched and invites to play with the ambient light. Indeed, it is by moving around it that different lines of reading appear. Depending on the angle of vision, natural or shading lighting, different works are given to read! Inspired by the changing ballet of starlings in the sky, called Murmuration in English, I gave this name to my equally changing works. I hope to make you feel that nothing is fixed, that sometimes we only need to take a step aside to change our view of the world... or even change the world...". - Léa Valmain

The most humble of materials, paper, has always fascinated Léa Valmain. It sometimes bears curious names, varies in thickness, velvety, format, colour... The full and empty, the shadow and light that play with the notions of presence and absence are the other artistic interests of this artist. Using a surgical scalpel, she gently cuts the paper in its thickness, creates a movement, makes lines, curves gush out without (almost!) ever piercing the sheet. She sculpts directly, without prior drawing, just guided by the emotion of a moment. The pattern that appears then is not fixed.

Gently approach to make the light dance and create moving shadows... Take a small step aside and everything changes... Then another and another. At every glance, a new work! While admiring in the Toulouse sky, the ballet of starlings who also create changing paintings in a few moments, she wanted to give the name "Murmurations" to these engraved papers.
