In these times of change and uncertainty about the future, artists are confronted with images that are taking shape in their minds. Climate change is a fact now inherent in our lives. This painting perhaps represents an Arctic port, one of those industrial complexes where oil extracted in the polar regions arrives to be loaded into giant tankers, floating on a burning sea, (industrial accident?) or perhaps sailing itself on the ocean of molten magma on which all the tectonic plates float. This work talks about humans and nature, about the gigantic Earth and reminds us that the earth's crust, the lithosphere, is only a few kilometres thick, a ridiculous thickness compared to the size of the planet.

Fabienne Monestier prefers to evoke nature rather than emulate it. For the most part, she paints from her imagination. Any subject is capable of catching her interest, as everything is a potential source for inspiration and plastic interpretation.

Drawing and painting, art as a driving force

Born into a family of DIY enthusiasts and all-rounders, Fabienne Monestier was encouraged to express her creativity from an early age. As soon as she was able, she picked up a pencil and began doodling, drawing and inventing images.

Later, she studied experimental film and engraving at the Institut d'Arts Visuels d'Orléans, where she was awarded a post-graduate qualification in plastic education for her two short films. She has now returned to her first loves and works as a painter full time.

Fabienne Monestier, technique over subject

The subject comes second in Fabienne Monestier's approach. Her real inspirations are pictorial techniques. Frequently using transparent colours for their rich and deep tones, she works on canvas, wood and paper, in oil watercolours, ink, coloured pencils, acrylic, markers, charcoal, black chalk and using mixed techniques... constantly exploring new avenues!
