Harmony is undoubtedly a subtle mixture of chaos and balance. At least that is what Anne-Marie Pernet's artistic practice leads us to believe. On her canvases, signs, flat areas and spots accumulate, not without an acute sense of composition. Proceeding at first by instinct, letting the light of the day and her mood guide her gestures, the artist then lets the work rest before returning to it. It is then a new and critical eye that takes hold of the canvas: it is time to balance the chaos.
"Abstract painting gives me a freedom that I can't find anywhere else.
Free in her letting go, Marie Pernet becomes free in her control; balancing motifs, taking up a curve, adding a spray mark here, to a marker line. "It's a juxtaposition of order and chaos, micro and macro, straightness amidst curves."
Paradoxical because it mixes the voluntary with the unpredictable, this work is also paradoxical in that it integrates very graphic drawings on more indefinite coloured backgrounds, giving an impression of a double plane and therefore of depth to the painting.
Also noteworthy is the hybrid aspect of his art, the result of a mixture of techniques such as painting, graffiti and collage.
If we were to link this profusion
of energetic colours to a current, it would be graffiti, this specific visual vocabulary which Marie Pernet's work is similar to in many respects. The use of spray cans, random inscriptions, unintelligible calligraphy and embryonic motifs all contribute to this resemblance.
