"I have always enjoyed reading Philip Roth's novels and I particularly liked the screen adaptation of "Deception", which is more autobiographical.
From there I wanted to paint a portrait of Philip Roth.

I chose to paint him with acrylics using the black and white photo of the great photographer Irving Penn. I chose this photo with that finger pressing his lips and that doubtful look because it represents Roth's questioning that is found in many of his novels." Rosemay

"Why did I start drawing at the age of seven when I was contemplating Goya’s "Les vieilles"? I must have been impressed by the strong and black line of these women, the very modern contrast and the horror vision of Goya.pThis life force I found in drawing and then in painting.p The colour came late, in Tuscany. Gouache in black, white and grey was my first medium. Then watercolour interfered until the day when dry pastel pushed everything overboard: colour became my ally! I stare at faces, scan them and plough them like landscapes. I work them "on the pattern" or from black and white photos and then compose the colors starting with the eyes. Everything goes through the eyes and the rest follows, I also like working nude with artist friends, here too, the strong line, the body that you have to grasp in a few strokes of charcoal and then dare to mix ink, pastel and compressed charcoal: juggling with the different media: this is what motivates my journey in the land of art and especially keep the joy of painting and exploring.Rosemay
