"I could have named this painting "from paper to canvas". I tried to rediscover the delicacy of working on rice paper by creating a play of transparency between a background that has been worked so as not to be completely white and the white of the brushstrokes that delicately detach themselves from the background." Born in Paris in 1964, Hélène Jacqz grew up in Fontenay-aux-Roses and moved to Paris in 1982. She joined the Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1986, drawing a lot from nature and at the Louvre, admires the Nabis. She graduated from the Beaux-Arts in 1991, then received two scholarships (Fulbright and Lavoisier) in 1991 and 1992 to study at the Parsons School of Art in New York. Back in France in 1996, she worked in her workshop in Montrouge.

"In 2008, by deepening a creative process linked to improvisation (unlike what I had studied and explored in my school years, but in the continuity of my work since the late 1990s), I was gradually and empirically led to turn to fulgurance, as a mode of creation, by placing more and more trust in my intuition and in what my body dictated to me: instinctive gestures just like those of a shamanic dance. In order to prolong my limbs and free myself from my physical limitations by giving myself an inner reality, I have built various tools, long brushes, triple rollers in order to multiply the possibilities of turning easily with the brushes and to restore the fantasy of my impulses.

Since then, without my knowledge, the space in my paintings has completely changed, it has become open. My paintings then continue their story well beyond the narrow edges of the frame and restore in a whirlwind, a small piece of universe (cosmic, inner, molecular???) which then invites the eyes to open up to infinity.

I now conceive the space of the painting as the result of a concentration of energy in a given moment, the only way for me to be in contact with the deepest aspect of my personality and to keep the freshness of the first impulse. It's a state of trance. Actually, I'm very whole. I want to put everything in an instant: the rhythm, the light, the color and especially my heart, as if in a prayer! At the right time, as for an orchestra, all the elements must contribute to the final result. Hesitation, doubt or the absence of a colour or a tool can be fatal to painting! technically, it's quite risky... and when it's successful, I know it almost immediately.

The transition to painting on very large formats is always a very intense moment and totally exceeds me. This moment, once the canvas is finished, no longer belongs to me. It is offered to others. I believe in the power of art to awaken the desire to live and renew the times. My paintings are the expression of these convictions."
