"Féminicides" is a rather special work in the artist's career, created in memory of the 149 women murdered within their couple in 2019, in France. It records the name of each victim, like a graphic investigation, a mausoleum of the intimate sphere. A large, swollen woman's face, surrounded by gold, caviar ink, crosses and the list of murdered women, seems to be reflected in us, as if after a shock, a violent trauma, which challenges our conscience.

The home, the first place of violence for women in France in the 21st century? Mothers, companions, daughters, grandmothers, silent colleagues or friends? It was important to Gwendoline Finaz de Villaine to pay homage to the victims, and to the thousands of lives turned upside down, by giving all her support to the volunteers and members of civil society who are working to change things.

In this post-Covid period, women's solidarity must be exercised to the full and serve as a bulwark against extreme excesses. All proceeds from the sale of this painting will be donated to an association that defends women affected by domestic violence. In 2019, the Ministry of the Interior counted 149 feminicides; this is 21% more than in 2018. Since January 2020, 62 women have been killed by their spouse or ex-partner.

Gwendoline Finaz de Villaine is a writer, singer and painter. A former student of Radio France, Sciences Po Paris and HEC, she has worked with Michel Fugain, Elie Chouraqui, Roger Louret and Jean-Claude Camus. She has sung at Folies Bergère, Le Zénith, for M6, France Télévisions and in several musicals in Paris.

At the same time, she wrote a historical and fantastic three-volume saga, "Les Brumes de Grandville", and published a fourth novel in January 2019, "De poudre, de cendre et d’or", by French Pulp Éditions. His painting is a paper music, influenced by his stage experience, cubism, surrealism and African art.

Passionate about the 1920s period, she likes to conversate her "unconscious in the open air" with totems in Indian ink and jugs dancing; we find the influence of Cocteau, Picasso, Gio Ponti and the African masks that are dear to her.

"I never know where a painting will take me and I am always surprised by the final result, which appears before my eyes as a premonition, a message from the afterlife. »

"In my life, I have always been in search of freedom, and the most absolute freedom is painting. »

"I am fascinated by the masks and the magical charge of African art. »
