Painting of pocket books very material in shades of turquoise blue and ocher on linen canvas.

Close to geometric abstraction, the viewer is invited to enter this universe of purified books. As always, the canvas is worked with a multitude of layers with vibrating hues. The artist has been working on the theme of books and libraries since 2016 bringing a different spirit to each new canvas. The work is framed with a black wooden American box.

"Sophie DUMONT’s abstract is not a concept, it is an approach where each canvas is built around a graphic design put into perspective by colour. The drawing can recall the shape of a body or the meanders of a landscape. It is only the unpremeditated interpretation of a figurative idea, which takes on other forms in space. The canvas is structured around a set of curves and lines filtering the lights. It is in this refined construction that the palette of often vivid tones comes into play. But the substance is never raw, drawing from its maturation of lyrical effects that are the result of a fruitful work of the material. The knife shapes the material in successive layers that fuse into a combination of shimmering colours. The underlying presence of the different substrates creates this vibration born of the contrast between matter and colour, to give the representation a life of its own, independent of any reference.

The viewer’s gaze, far from being guided, is invited to travel freely through the canvas. His perception is only the expression of his own emotions, subjected simply to the effect of the modulations transcribed by the artist. Hence this permanent relationship between works whose appearances and spirit are sometimes changing, but which symbolize a coherent and sincere approach."
