"The isthmus is a piece of land that separates two seas, which refuses to be swallowed up. It is a cordon and a place of passage by definition, a link between two territories. It is also the place of articulation between two organs in the body. Finally, in geometry, it is what connects two similar figures to each other.
The Isthmus is my dream of territory that I build for each painting, a space of contemplation, a space of relentless struggle to become both a mental and physical space, to work with the mind by deploying the emotional charge of colour. The isthmus represents the constancy of painting and what remains to be conquered as a sign of what is called landscape.
This series is a variation on the pattern as a musician would do on a few notes depending on his inspiration. These are three colours placed on a flat, monochrome surface ranging from blue to grey. Their refined assemblage also seeks to go beyond this simple notion of landscape to reveal another domain, a materiality of feelings." - François Lemaire
