"In 2018, I finally decided to go for a short stay in Ushant. First I find the cold and hectic sea aboard the Pennarbed from Brest. Let's go for 2h30 of crossing, just to cut ourselves off from the world. Everything is as we imagine it: the harshness and tanned skins of people, the moor, the silvery or green sea depending on the sun, the black sheep, the cut rocks that let themselves be invaded by a raging and noisy sea, the fulgurance of a paradisiacal luminosity...

I don't know what, rocks, seaweed or houses inspired me the most, but I always come back with a small series of paintings on paper in round and refined shapes, and in local colours... which will be the starting point for several works. Abstract landscape related to my stay in Ushant in March 2018." - Nathalie Leverger

This painting represents kelp (long algae). Oil work, pencil and charcoal on paper, mounted on canvas. Mounted on a chassis. 2018.

It was through a chance discovery of painting that Nathalie Leverger decided to devote herself entirely to art. His sensations and observations, the starting point of his creation, allow him a prolific and materialist work that takes us to the discovery of a lyrical landscape.

A hazardous discovery of painting

Born in 1966, Nathalie Leverger spent her childhood in the port at Le Légué in the Côtes d´Armor. From the paternal branch, she inherits a passion for the sea, the light, the horizon and the expanses while the maternal side brings her a practice of sewing and needles.

Graduated in 1989 from AUDENCIA, Nantes Business School, she discovered painting in 2000 at random from a box of oils offered to her at Christmas. If the revelation is immediate, it takes three years for him to question his professional position within a large distribution group to devote himself exclusively to the art.

Freedom and experimentation as a guideline

During her excursions in nature, in the city, she photographs what surrounds her and then recomposes her productions based on the sensations she may have felt. It is very often the detail of an object, a material, a smell, or even a color that is the starting point of a study. A prolific artist, she then developed this work in oil paintings, in textile or paper volumes, photographs, artists' books and books, objects, installations ... It is her work on patterns and accumulations, leaving room for "accidents », Which allows him to experiment in complete freedom.

Since 2006, she has tackled the themes of the highway (On the Road: photographs and paintings), childhood (The schoolyard: paintings and paper sculptures), motherhood (A bird, A cage: paper of silk and inks), frustration (The apartment: paintings and paper sculptures), intimacy (Fireflies: sculptures and paper and textile installations, photographs, inks, artist's books), the quest for happiness ( A beautiful Life, Les Nouveaux Amis: paintings drawings collages), landscape (Fisheries, In the Marge, The New Horizons, Ushant: paintings, textile sculptures, photographs).

A poetic vision of the landscape

Nathalie Leverger paints, cuts, models, glues, knits and unrays without asking the question of the artistic genre. She cultivates her self-taught status to assert her freedom to do things, in a fairly raw and instinctive materialist approach. Its refined oils, its crocheted cotton traps, its origami installations, compose a poetic universe in which we retain a certain duality around the notions of power and delicacy. It is her poetic vision of the landscape that she seeks to tell us.

Her meeting in 2011 with Paule Elisabeth Oddéro, a poet, led him to broaden his plastic practice to include paper and textiles. Both working around themes chosen in common (Birds, Fireflies and Fisheries), she seeks for her part to create works that approach the delicacy of the author's texts.
