"Closed doors, muted colors. Nothing happens, or at least nothing explicit. Some men and women stare at us, taking us to task, others ignore us or are totally foreign to us because of a very tight frame.

I wanted to create a series of paintings that do not easily reveal themselves to the viewer, so that he or she can have a role to play in this staging where a feeling of anxiety prevails. Images that could have been extracted from a film while depriving us of key scenes; a puzzle with missing pieces that would cause some discomfort." - Dated and signed on the back.

As an artist, specifically a painter, Marta Grassi’s body of work is half way between abstraction and figurativism. By delving into her artistic world, you’ll be greeted with a dreamlike aesthetic, creating feelings of nostalgia and allowing you to reminisce about distant memories and dreams long forgotten.

Experimentation as Her Driving Force

Marta Grassi grew up in Uruguay surrounded by painters, in a family environment where art and creativity were at the heart of just about everything.

After studying Textile Design in her home town, she moved to Paris where she attended the city’s Fine Arts studios and workshops.

Although classically trained in figurative art, the artist does not limit herself illustrating everyday reality. In fact, Marta Grassi experiments with abstraction through colorful and atmospheric works.

The artist dabbles in both drawing and painting and experiments with acrylics, pastels, oils and pigments. She juxtaposes these mediums in order to create unique and varied effects.

An Invitation to Dream

Marta Grassi's painting is rooted in her South American origins. In particular, she is influenced by the literary movement known as "realismo mágico“ (magic realism), which, as the name suggests, a combination of realistic fiction with magical moments weaved into it. This "magic realism" delves into the improbable, turning the universe we all know into a place full of dreamlike manifestations.

If women are at the heart of her work, animals and nature are also just as crucial.

Her intimate works immerse us in a somewhat poetic and particularly mysterious universe. The artist wants the viewer to take ownership of the story behind her work.
