Born in 1971 in Courtalain, Eure-et-Loir, Armel Jullien is a self-taught painter who now lives in Haute-Loire. From 1989 to 1992, he studied at the Brassart School of Graphic Art in Tours where he obtained a diploma as a draftsman in advertising. Very early on, painting became his main interest, even though he devoted himself to watercolour from 1990 to 1994. Between 1993 and 1996, Armel Jullien worked extensively on drawing from nature and frequently visited the Louvre to admire, observe, discover and meet the works of the masters, and more precisely those of painters from the Middle Ages to the Baroque. If he doesn’t take any painting classes, he has a strong desire to "do like" them. It was during this period that oil painting became established and never left him... Armel Jullien was as interested in Dürer, Holbein, Rubens, Velazquez as he was in Lucian Freud, Eric Fischl, Liu Xiaodong... And many others.
