"This self-portrait was done on a rainy day, when I painted myself in front of my bathroom mirror."

Barbara Petit presents figurative painting arising most frequently from a motif. She favours portraits and life models. In them, she sees a sort of quest for origins, for our human identity.

Learning and passing on painting

Barbara Petit was born in 1977 in Pas-de-Calais. She first took an interest in drawing and composition at a very young age. A few years later, she was introduced to painting by various professional painters. After receiving a number of awards at various events in and around the French capital, she today continues her journey as a painter and teaches painting in Paris. She also regularly provides advice in the practical pages of the magazine Pratique des Arts.

Alongside painting, her work as a journalist has enabled her to learn more about the history of art, notably in her collaboration for the André Derain sketchbooks.

Painting to reveal the beauty of the world

Barbara Petit works most often in a studio when the subject is nature or outside if working on a motif. She sees painting as a way of reproducing the beauty of the world around her, the love she has for it and the love it has for her, with her imagination, emotions and feelings.

Beauty is hidden everywhere, even in the simplest things, like a landscape or a composition… The subject is but a pretext for self-expression. What matters is the painting.
