Since 2007, multidisciplinary artist Franck Le Boulicaut, has returned to his old love: painting. Enamored with light, this creator trained with the likes of Eric Bari, Marc Folly and Jean-Claude Chaillou, and strives to tribute the look and feel of his numerous artistic idols (Cézanne, Caravaggio, Sargent, Freud…) in his own way.

A balancing act between composition and freedom of movement

Painted alla prima, his figurative paintings, show a certain thoroughness in the way they juggle compositions - masses, object placements, colours - and an obvious taste for a certain artistic freedom

"As much in the choice of the subject as in the choice of its staging, I try above all to express an emotion. Whether it be purely visual through the play of values, colours, framing or whether it be evocative through a pose, a look ... I pay particular attention to the composition of the painting beforehand: force lines, proportions, light values, format…".

Forget everything to succeed in painting

Influenced by some of Betty Edwards’ work (see her book "Drawing with the right brain"), Franck Le Boulicaut has been painting his pictures upside down since 2013. Particularly effective with portraits, this method allows to free oneself from any subjectivity induced by what one "knows" about the subject by refocusing the painter's attention solely on directions, values and colours.

His original technique was the subject of an article in number 128 of "Pratique des Arts" magazine (May / June 2016).
