Mathieu Weemaels

Mathieu Weemaels was born in 1967 in Brussels. He studied drawing at Cambre but his career was mainly self -taught.
"My paintings speak of solitude, interiority, silence, mystery. I organize compositions based on everyday objects which touch me or that I find interesting. I do not consider myself a painter of still lifes but Rather as an abstract painter who represents objects. And this for several reasons: each painting starts from an idea of composition, main lines of force, perspectives, objects are there as a pretext, to dress space. And I give little importance to represent the real. I consider that painting is there to talk about what is not seen, silence, mystery, solitude. There are often mirrors in these figurative compositions /abstract. They are for me a way of destroying a linear vision, they duplicate, destroy and bring in this a part of abstraction within a conventional scene, a way of revisiting the dead nature. The mirrors also have me Always fascinated for their symbolism, the impression that they give me to be like doors to another world, another reality. Alice in Wonderland..."
In parallel to this regular work started in the 1980s, Mathieu Weemaels explored other tracks: a work on the naked in the 2000s and landscapes always tinged with abstraction. The first 15 years, he only worked on the paste but since then he has used the oil almost exclusively.
