Mathieu Weemaels
Belgium
  • KAZoART artist since 2018

Mathieu Weemaels was born in 1967 in Brussels. He studied drawing at La Cambre but his career was mainly self-taught.

"My paintings speak of loneliness, interiority, silence, mystery. I organize compositions based on everyday objects that touch me or that I find interesting. I do not consider myself as a still life painter but rather as an abstract painter who represents objects. This is for several reasons: each painting starts from an idea of composition, broad lines of force, perspectives, objects are there as a pretext, to dress the space. And I attach little importance to representing reality. I consider that painting is there to talk about what is not seen, silence, mystery, solitude. There are often mirrors in these figurative/abstract compositions. They are for me a way to destructure a linear vision, they split, destructure and bring in this a part of abstraction within a conventional scene, a way to revisit the still life. Mirrors have also always fascinated me for their symbolism, the impression they give me of being like doors to another world, another reality. Alice in Wonderland..."

In parallel to this regular work begun in the 1980s, Mathieu Weemaels explored other avenues: a work on the nude in the 2000s and landscapes always tinged with abstraction. For the first 15 years, he only worked in pastel, but since then he has used oil almost exclusively.
