"The Nebulae - 004 is a unique work from my collection "Ode to Jakarta", which consists of watercolours, developed from the textile technique of batik. I chose to make a translation and to apply this technique to paper. The wax is flowing, unctuous, it seems made to draw curves.
That's why I chose to work with angles and straight lines in variations of grids, because it's graphically the opposite of what the tool wants to do. By using this principle, I tried to insert blur, accident in my work always calculated. The hot material of the wax was difficult to tame. Its impact on the paper differs according to the heat and my speed.
That's what allows me to insert surprise: where the wax clings, there will remain its white and legible imprint in the paper, while if it is deposited loosely enough, the watercolour will spread underneath and take its place. Once my six layers of paint have been applied, each removal of wax is a real discovery. The creation is balanced and takes on its full meaning for me through a dialogue established between logic and letting go."
