"The grid of 'The Supernovas-004' seems to tear instantly in the white space of the paper. The blur, obtained thanks to my first pass of painting, completely serves the purpose. Opposite corners are mostly painted with two shades of black and the color bursts, illuminates and brings the center of the painting to life. For this series, I have access to my research on luminosity and work around the diagonal. For the development of my collection, I chose to work with a textile technique applied to paper, batik. Hot wax is applied to the places that you do not wish to colour. It is a delicate work, which is done under pressure: each grid of my work is thus traced.

I had to tame a hot material; I had to learn to work fast. I chose a paper usually used in engraving, a thick Japanese paper, which absorbs water like a sponge, which completely takes care of the paint. I apply six successive layers of watercolour, which I choose to wet more or less, in order to use the transparency properties of the material over a wide range.

This allows me to obtain complex and charged colours, really vibrant and full of reflections. When my paint is dry, I have to delicately remove the wax from the paper. Each removal is a real discovery for me. The creation is balanced and then takes on its full meaning through a dialogue established between logic and letting go."

A textile designer by trade, Camille Tardif has recently embarked on a multidisciplinary creative approach, the very essence of which is to bring together techniques that are refractory to one another in order to create something new. Taking things in the wrong direction is an essential value of her work.

With seven years of graduate studies in design, the artist quickly felt trapped by having learned too much. Inevitably, she repeats what she has been taught. The whole point of her approach today is to succeed in bringing her technique and her instinct into dialogue, to find a balance between logic and letting go.

Repetition is an obsessive principle for Camille Tardif, as much for the principle as for its aesthetic character: it is therefore natural that she finds herself present in her work. It is in the detail and in the repetition of the infinitely small that she offers creations to be apprehended from afar.
