In Chinese culture, the "Four Gentlemen", also known as the "Four Noble Plants", refers to orchids, bamboo, chrysanthemums and plum blossoms.

The orchid that grows in the serene valleys symbolizes an elegant character in defiance of vulgarity. In the "Orchid abstraction" series, the flower motif is a continuation of Chinese orchid paintings which, through the use of drawing and watercolour, tends to express the elegance of a flower in its wild state beyond all banality.
