Genevieve Michon

Saint Bauzille de Montmel (34), France

7 works

Geneviève Michon is an ethnobotanist and photographer. Her professional life and her artistic interests revolve around the Tree, and in particular the "Peasant Tree", the one that has accompanied the rural cultures of the world since the dawn of time, the one that has forged its personality in contact with Man. A proposition that can be reversed (what if it was the personality of Man that was gradually refined through contact with Trees?) and which gives the work another dimension: through his images, is it not also, and above all, the cultures mixed between Man and Tree that the artist wishes to reflect? Is it not, in the end, a certain type of relationship with Nature and other forms of life that is at stake? It is therefore a question of presenting Trees made up of both their own history and the complicities woven with several dozen generations of Men. Trees worked by Men, as reflections of Men crossed by these Trees. Experiencing the Tree in the diversity of its forms and the stories that make it up gradually creates an initiatory journey as much as a form of contemplation of what remains eternally inaccessible to us: a form of life that is totally foreign to ours, but which is nonetheless closely intertwined with it, envelops us and allows us to live. Plant forms in which our own history is written. In order to stay as close as possible to what these trees transmit to her, Geneviève Michon superimposes snapshots taken on the spot, playing between transparency and opacity, often mixing in "brushstrokes" and drawings borrowed from her colleague Philippe Deltour, a visual artist with whom she has been working for more than three years now. These images, often reworked over a long period of time, gradually constitute a "forest by accumulation", in which the artist's work ends up weaving into the trunks and branches all the human stories, now erased, that have crossed them and, often, marked them. A forest that is not a replication of the Same, but a deployment of total singularities, of slow, immobile dances, patiently built over the centuries. And behind this forest of Trees, but without any pictorial anthropomorphism, a forest of human silhouettes, faces and gestures, still present around these Trees: a humanity inscribed in filigree.
