Queen Isabel of Portugal institutionalized theatrical representations of Moors and Christian knights to recreate the battle of Charlemagne that lasted three days. The battle was simulated in the streets and arenas of the city in medieval costumes, called "Cavalhadas". The Mascarados or traditional Curucucus are anonymous horsemen, unrecognizable under their disguises with very colorful papier-mache heads, ox or panther.

The masked solitary or in groups take possession of the streets, announced by tinkling bells hung on the necks of the horses decorated with multicolored materials, fabrics, ribbons, plants ... protected by their appearances, change their voice and can afford everything: dancing, jumping, playing jokes, begging, flirting. The joy settles in all the streets releasing an absolute will as for chasing away the evil spirits. Pirenopolis, a city of 25,000 souls, very famous for its annual popular celebrations, is located in the state of Goias in Brazil.

This is a print on Hahnemühle Rag Baryta fine art paper.

Born in Paris, based in São Paulo for 17 years, Jérôme is back in France since 2020. He began his career in photography at the Louis Lumière school in 1983. In 1985, he joined the Astre studio in Paris where he worked with world-renowned photographers such as Bert Stern, David Bailey, Albert Watson, Bill King, Steven Silverstein.

Jerome combines his passion for travel and adventure with the realization of various photographic projects, such as his series in Amazonia on the Indians and the forest. From Paris to New York, from Bolivia to Jamaica through various editorials and adventure companies. Jerome has traveled the world collaborating with many brands and personalities.

Jérôme Sainte Rose is an atypical photographer if there is one, who has been photographing for many years the movement of his passions to the rhythm of his emotions. His photos have an obvious link with the ethnic admiration of distant tribes. The artist observes the real as through life. His art is warm and bubbling with strong vibrations, the opposite of hyperrealism which photographs with a cold virtuosity. Images of conquests where the strength of his vision is mixed. The colors are frank, powerful, energizing, often melted in a psychedelic decor, magnifying the subject, as if to glorify the seized moment and inscribe an expression in eternity. An almost hypnotic eye that transports in the magic of his look. His imagination brings to surrealism a very particular atmosphere between fusion and light. The artist is gifted with an aesthetic emotional intensity certainly linked to a rich and intense life that transports in its dimension.
