The COSMOS II series deals with the conquest of space. The works are combinations of images of various origins: images of NASA reworked in painting composing landscapes in which characters from 18th and 19th century painting are portrayed. The characters portrayed either evoke the discrepancy between this ultra-technology and our everyday life, or they embody in a caricatured way the human madness driven by this need for domination and conquest. Aesthetic references to ancient painting suggest that the romantic vision of a beneficial and energy-consuming space adventure is now a thing of the past, at a time when ecological and energy concerns are our present and our future. The scene depicts two characters, one seated in an introspective attitude in the middle of a setting evoking an interior but with elements of a space satellite, and a female figure floating outside. The female figure is there as a ghostly apparition, virgin or allegory of the cosmos. The seated character's attitude is ambiguous and allows several interpretations. Is he dreaming, or is he turning his back on the stage and on the technology that has invaded his familiar environment. This work once again raises the question of our relationship to technology and the idea of space conquest. Digital collage: photography and paintings. Fine Art printing: pigment inks on smooth cotton paper 300g, passe partout, natural wood frame. Framed dimensions 52.4 x 62.4 cm (image 38.8 x 45 cm) Print made by the artist Photographic source: NASA Characters: after Ralph Earl (Public Domain) and Jean Béraud (Public Domain)

The relationship with nature has been at the heart of Sébastien Grenier’s artistic work for more than fifteen years. His research leads him to apprehend the raw nature as a form of incarnate truth, plural, a set of forces. Experiencing the landscape, the elements that make it up, is preponderant and is part of an initiatory journey. All of his work is characterized by a certain attraction for origins, the primitive, but also reflects the impermanence of things, their constant mutations, the mysterious organization of chaos. The absence of human presence, familiar objects or architectural elements, the loss of reference points of scale, perspective or temporality lead to a total immersion and a direct reconnection, free from the prism of culture, to matter and living things. In this way, it testifies to a desire to restore nature to our sight, our memory, this intimate and collective memory, which underpins and connects us. Using painting, photography, mixed techniques, digital experiments, collages, Sébastien Grenier has developed a unique writing style. His work is also divided between immersion in the heart of nature and fitness in the workshop or darkroom. After more than forty years spent in the major cities of Paris, Nantes and Bordeaux, he opened his studio in 2013 in the small village of St Antonin Noble Val in the heart of the Aveyron gorges.
