Trained in industrial design, Nicolas Desbons, juggles between specifications from the locksmith and ironwork, and his own passion: the sculpting of steel. Indeed, when he works the material, Nicolas Desbons appreciates the supple nature of female bodies and tries to create colourful female silhouettes.

His chosen path: that of steel

Born in 1969 in Paris, Nicolas Desbons began studying art in high school. In 1989, he entered a preparatory class at the A.T.E.P. and studied a year later at the California College of Arts and Craft in San Francisco.

It is after studying Industrial Design that he devotes himself to steel and begins his locksmithing and ironwork apprenticeship in Montreuil, with Fred Vigy. After one year, he finally creates the private company "Desbons Design" in Montreuil which, in 1999, will become "La Boîte de Fer" in partnership with his former mentor during his apprenticeship.

From Industrial designer to Artist

In 2001, Nicolas Desbons drastically changed career paths and opened a workshop in order to become a full fledged artist. Since then, he has put on many shows and exhibitions. He has had notable success in France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

"The words of the sculptor are often times bogged down with sawdust and wood shavings, raw from their state, they seek themselves in the magma of impressions. For a long time I explored the feminine figure, first with caution and a little fear but now I feel more comfortable doing so.

I look for the masculine figure, which is not easy, less known, less flexible and it is there that I am able to find my true creativity. In a place where roles are reversed and freedom of artistic expression can thrive, in these strange and uncertain times. This new era where man is striving to find his place among women and the constant technological advances that set this period in time apart from anything that came before“.
