The undines are deities or water geniuses associated with Germanic and Nordic mythology. They are magical creatures that take on a feminine form. With this work, the artist was inspired by these legends by giving the clay the sinuosity and grace of a young girl’s body. The enamel evokes the Argentine reflections of water, an element to which it is associated.

Sculptor of Italian origin, Monica Sarandrea creates works in search of a personal link to nature and its spiritual dimensions.

From informal art to abstraction

Born in Rome, Monica Sarandrea has devoted herself to drawing and in particular, to landscape painting. After several stays in Paris from 2005 to 2010, she enroled in classes taught by Alberto Parres at La Porta Blu Art School.

Sarandrea has worked with chromatic and gesture painting, gradually moving towards informal art and abstraction. From 2011, she has devoted herself to sculpture, focusing on materials such as stone, clay and plaster.

Creating a dialogue between nature and its elements

Monica Sarandrea’s works are the result of a dialogue with nature and its elements, in particular, water and land, which are intimately linked to femininity. This research evokes a certain biomorphism, halfway between the animal world and that of human beings.

Poetry, in particular, French symbolism, plays a crucial role among his sources of inspiration, on the same level as oriental philosophies imbued with animism.
