ZED has been sculpting forever. He was born with the gift of sculpture. His family does not expose him to art and becoming an artist is far from his preoccupations. His youth does not resemble the Happy Family that constitutes his work. The wise child takes refuge in his imagination and builds this exceptional resilience that will lead him to become an artist.
It is at the age of 12, on the beach, that he discovers the potential of sand; as a young adult, clay becomes his confidante. Carried by the need to create, to express his sensitivity through the material, David Zeller remembers: "As a child, I used to sculpt life-size bodies on the sand and later, we would spend evenings with friends modelling figures."
More mature, living in the West Indies, he discovers precious wood and sculpts his first works in an unprecedented instinctive creative urgency. Figurative, sensual, oscillating between an ethnic and classical style, they met with dazzling success and a few months later, his first auction enabled him to be listed in the files of Artprice, the world leader in artist quotations. ZED's artistic career is officially launched.
To emancipate his art, he decided to move to Italy, making a detour to his native Alsace: "It was Christmas 2009 and I found myself without a studio. Without wood. I collected Plexiglas scraps from a nearby industrialist and created Flexo to make art accessible to all." The unique silhouette of this character, uncluttered to the essential, genderless, ethnic and faceless, is an instant hit. The Flexo Edition is born! With its varied postures, the Flexo embodies the multiplicity of our behaviours. It is the reflection of our individual identity: at once singular, multiple, fluid and shared. From Tokyo to Miami, via Europe, Flexo is present in some thirty galleries around the world.
In 2020, ZED launches Passwords. Worthy heirs of Op art or Optical Art, these paintings of a pure geometrical aestheticism that inevitably impact the eye each contain a hidden message dear to the artist.
