Roxana Richard

Autodidact plastic artist of Romanian origin, Roxana Richard lives and works in La Rochelle-France. With her childhood spent in Romania she kept the love of popular arts: embroidery with geometric or floral patterns of traditional costumes, macramés, cross points and weaves adorning the houses. Popular works to embellish everyday life, repetitive work, tirelessly taking up patterns transmitted from generation to generation. Seeking its own means of expression, Roxana is loved with paper, this ancestral material of plant origin whose texture and Light are madly poetic. Used an already so beautiful material not being easy, it decides to intervene in order to emphasize the natural assets of each type of paper: transparency, fragility, thickness and taking light .Roxana Richard works the paper with different diverted tools to mark it with cuts, holes, scales and burns, bring up shapes, reliefs of its thickness, which capture the light and move the patterns. Meticulous, repetitive, and controlled gestures, often on the verge of rupture, a slow and silent performance to create fragile and delicate low reliefs. Each intervention: hole, scales, incision, is a decision which impacts and irreversibly transforms the support, the movement is born and structures each action. These accumulated and thoughtful gestures are part of the know -how and the work, and are the link with crafts dear to his childhood. The paper is transformed in textured, alive and changing matters according to the games of shadows and lights. The watching is hypnotized by these paradoxical optical surfaces playing with full and gaps, volume and transparency, movement and immobility. They are hollow or bumps, petals or waves, lines or cells, the different textures call for caress, follow with the fingertips the edge of cuts and burns, touch the pins, feel the shape and soak up its reality.
