The Night Sky Collection

Humans have always found poetic mystery and mesmerising beauty in the night sky.

The night sky was personified in Ancient Egypt by the goddess Nut who was often depicted arched into the shape of a crescent moon, with stars decorating her body. Shakespeare wrote about the majesty of the stars in The Merchant of Venice, describing how "the floor of heaven is thick inlaid with patens of bright gold". In 1969 650 million viewers tuned in to watch the televised moon landings.

World Space Week runs between the 4th and 10th of October, and National Astronomy Week is taking place in the UK in mid- November. WSW is "an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition"
